It’s summer time and things get hot, and here they get humid! Weather it’s after hours of jumping on the trampoline, after a soccer game, or a day of gymnastics camp whipping up cold delicious smoothie and slushes is something that goes down daily in our house. Well at least when we are home. Sometimes multiple times a day. There are times when a smoothie is too thick or you just want something light, refreshing, and hydrating and this refresher is perfect for that. Packed with watermelon! Watermelon contains electrolytes, which is perfect for post workout, I mean playing! Watermelon also contains L-citrulline, an amino acid, and lycopene, a carotenoid phytonutrient that’s been thought to be good for cardiovascular health. Pineapple has huge health benefits but in this aspect just focusing on reducing inflammation and improving circulation. It’s packed with vitamins and minerals and a great source of soluble and insoluble fiber (improved digestion). Basically the wonderful wonders of whole fruit, there’s a reason why we love it and crave it, besides the fact that it tastes so darn good! I sometimes think that my family could live off fruit, especially during the summer!
These refreshers are easy to make and only require 3 ingredients! Watermelon, pineapple, and a liquid. I usually use frozen watermelon (I buy extra to freeze when there’s a good sale) and fresh pineapple. This makes it cold and slushy. If you want to use all frozen fruit you can adjust the amount as you will need less. For the liquid we like to use watermelon water (WTR MLN WTR), maple water, or probiotic juice (Good Belly). The girls aren’t fans of coconut water but that and lemonade are also good options, as well as Bia or flavored water. Having a summer picnic or campfire you can also add rum to make a tasty adult cocktail!
Cheers to summer and soaking up all the sunny days while we can!
